Why we need inspiration heroes: Team Sail Like A Girl.

We have a bit of a catch-22 in our modern society as our access to stories from around the world continues to expand its interconnected nature through digital means, like this blog. In this wonderful way, we can watch everyone do amazing things and we can share in each other’s adventures, stories, trials, tribulations, failures…

Southwest Ireland is wildly, wonderfully, luxuriou Southwest Ireland is wildly, wonderfully, luxuriously, ruggedly beautiful—full of storybook scenes ‘round every corner. Here, we were exploring the Beara Peninsula, which is an area between the Kenmare river and Bantry Bay. The Beara contains two mountain ranges running down its center: the Caha Mountains and the Slieve Miskish Mountains. I was surprised by how calm and untouched the area was compared to the busier neighboring Ring of Kerry. Once again the weather was hazy and misty, making for beautiful ambience on the road following our morning’s exploration of Derreen’s Garden.

This week I’m exploring Kenmare, Ireland, and gr This week I’m exploring Kenmare, Ireland, and greater County Kerry with my dear friend, travel aficionado, and talented photographer Mandy @offcoursebird who is working with @Untours . We’re staying on a historic farm, feasting on the delicious locally sourced food provided to us, and getting out to hike and walk on our own through this beautiful part of the world. Untours is a travel company that specializes in the art of slow travel. It’s the kind of travel experience for folks like you and me—people who like to stop and stay awhile and have an honest-to-goodness local experience. As the world’s first “B Corp,” or in layman’s terms, “benefit corporation,” Untours invests directly into the communities and countries where they have programs. Our family has a hard time with the trappings of tourism and the sense of interruption that can come with hurried and harried travel. That means we often use Airbnb, with admittedly mixed results. Even though we’re staying alone in a lovely farm cottage, Untours thoroughly vetted the place and gave us a dedicated guide who started our trip with tons of local information shared over a lovely breakfast in town. Anyone who loves land and life, food and laughter, animals on the wild green, magic and lore and the unstoppable human spirit, must make a trip to Ireland to be inspired—and maybe even leave a small but lasting impact on Ireland and the community. ✨☘️

This beautiful slice of sweet grass heaven brought This beautiful slice of sweet grass heaven brought to you by a dear friend in June, off the coast of Dorset, in England. It was a time when I was worn out as all get-out. My lovely friend picked me up and we went hiking through places I had never been—but later learned were in my family tree. Here’s to friends. Here’s to getting outside. Here’s to the way the wind plays through grain on a late spring day. Here’s to remembering how to really breathe.

25 years ago I was a college student studying in R 25 years ago I was a college student studying in Rome. Back home, my first love had moved away to California to go to art school, and we had decided we were too young to date long distance. Time was a strange concept back then. I felt I would never be able to get over Brian, so one of my goals in Rome was to learn to move on. Instead he sent me love letters on giant sheets of easel paper written in his characteristically gorgeous penmanship, which I would unfold and read eagerly in my apartment overlooking the bustling and colorful outdoor market of Campo de’ Fiori (another place that heavily influenced my love of farm-to-table food and culture). One day, I was particularly sad and homesick and Brian sent me an email that I had to go to a biblioteca to read (there was no widely available internet back then). He said to imagine I was a princess in an enchanted kingdom and the world would roll at my feet. He sent me a Walkman and a tape of Charles Aznevour. I wandered the streets of Rome melancholy and lovesick and listening to ‘She’ on replay. One day Brian’s email said to go check out the L’uomo Vogue. I walked down to the newsstand in Campo de’ Fiori and opened the pages to his face alight on the pages…he was in a magazine spread for his art school, laughing in a dapper suit and making charcoal sketches on his big sheets of paper. I thought, well, now; the place where I went to get over him is the very place where he appears…in only the Italian Men’s Vogue of all places. Last month we returned to the newsstand with our children and a friend snapped this photo of us. It was a very magical moment indeed. 🌟💫

“Just like that.” We moved to Europe. Thanks t “Just like that.” We moved to Europe. Thanks to my friends and new acquaintances for keeping our location private as we aren’t announcing our new home right now. 🙏🏻 We still have our farm on the island; it’s doing just fine, the flowers are blooming and the trees are producing fruit and the grass is growing as fast as always. We’ve been away for a year and I took a long time away from this platform while re-centering myself. I will be picking up my IG/Facebook and blog again and sharing recipes and reflections as we explore this other big slice of the world. As always my content will focus on nature, self development, and food for body and soul while searching for wonder. There will be some changes as I adjust to a new space. Many many thanks to you for hanging in there with my year-long silence and to those of you who sent your love along the way. 🙏🏻😘

Do you ever wander along gorgeous scenery and star Do you ever wander along gorgeous scenery and start dreaming…. your whole life a tapestry? I think I could write a few essays about a couple of streets on my island and the views from both. Here’s one today that I caught driving home with Mt. Rainier in full majesty. #bainbridgeisland #dream #mtrainier #pugetsound #seattle
When you live on an island the shorelines wrap aro When you live on an island the shorelines wrap around you. Sunny days are divine. And I often ask myself, “are we where we’re from?” I guess I am an island girl through and through. Sun, sand, waves, and green all around…. It might be the most beautiful place on earth, at least to me. I think I will hold onto it forever, this wrapped embrace. #bainbridgeisland

Watch for tomorrow’s “buck moon,” the fullest super moon of the year. (A super moon stands out more than others because it is within 90% of its closest orbit to Earth.) The buck moon is the supermoon that will come closest to Earth this year. 🌝

A chance meeting 🦌 over coffee this morning. Th A chance meeting 🦌 over coffee this morning. This one arrived after the cottontail rabbit 🐇 bounced by. The red-tailed hawks started calling from their nest shortly after while the sparrows spun through the salty sea air and fat robins fetched breakfast in the grass. All over one cup of dark coffee ☕️ on the patio with @brianthompsonart . After a few morning meetings, Brian and this buck seem to understand each other. We obviously have some fence mending to do, but for now he seems amenable to leaving when asked.
