The last few years have been all about growing foo The last few years have been all about growing food, trying to dial in how much we needed to live off of. It still is—lots and lots of food is getting seeded into the garden this week, all the good stuff for preserving & eating fresh. But last winter I decided this year would also be about growing flowers and berries. We were ready for some sweetness and beauty. So I planted hundreds of bulbs, and I have thousands of seeds and bulbs still to go. And I tell you, gathering these narcissuses and pink daffodils and soft star magnolia buds on a sunny morning while Brian planted roses was, indeed, exactly beautiful in all the ways I hoped it would be. Just browsing around and arranging flowers is such therapy. Here’s wishing you some beauty and self-care today on your Sunday! 💐

You know those intro posts where people tell you a You know those intro posts where people tell you about themselves in bullet points? I realized recently that I have never done one. No “three truths and one lie,” nor “hi, there are so many new followers and hello, here’s a bit about me,” etc etc. So I thought today I would do some version of that.
1. I love welcoming people into my home. Opening the door, saying hi, and asking how you are, are three of my favorite things to do.
2. I love to ask questions—how was your day, what’s on your mind, what’s your story, where will you go from here? What’s the meaning of life, are you happy, do you like coffee or tea or wine or beer? I love listening to your reply.
3. Like my son I have a quirky imagination that skips around and draws connections three lily pads ahead of whatever it was you said a few minutes ago. I’m curious if you are living life according to your heart & soul, and if I care about you enough, I’ll ask.
4. I wake every day hoping for adventure.
5. I’m a total bleeding heart through and through.
6. I live for the sea and trees.
7. I have been incredibly lucky and also the unwitting recipient of heartlessness and evil. I have promised myself to always rise. See #9.
8. I am a writer. I type my thoughts in a fast two-handed cadence while I walk or run, sentences spooling out like old-fashioned alphabet soup. But I text and write on my phone (as I am doing now) with only my index finger.
9. I believe in fairytale endings and good ruling all. No matter what happens I believe in a higher good evening out the cards.
10. I have been in love with my husband since I first met him 26 years ago. He is my first love, my best friend, and the love of my life.
11. I could eat soup or tacos every meal of the day. Savory over sweet every time.
12. If you stand by me, I will honor you. I pay attention and love forever. If you disappear, I will learn to forget and move on.
13. I still hope to write the next great American novel.
14. My kids are my everything. When I hug them I am happy.
15. “Move forward” might be my motto in 2021. How about you?
Now tell me something random about you!!!

Today was gloriously sunny and it’s supposed to Today was gloriously sunny and it’s supposed to be 70 degrees all next week on our island. Everything will soon leaf out—all the quiet skeletal deciduous trees that have been slumbering will unfurl seemingly overnight into every shade and texture of green. This frilly white star magnolia tree always harkens the beginning of “wedding season” here on our property, when about 50 trees blossom out into white fragile flowers—from the dogwood and magnolia and hawthorn to the plum, pear, apple, and cherry—to all the tiny snowbells and whitebells and white tulips and ranunculus and narcissus and tiny lawn daisies and climbing roses and rhododendron and morning glory. It’s like the earth asks you to renew your vows with its beauty again and does it all splendidly, holding nothing back at all.

Chasing The Wind. Timing can be funny sometimes. D Chasing The Wind. Timing can be funny sometimes. Do you think so, too? This last weekend we headed to the windy coastline of Florence in Southern Oregon (you can watch a video snippet of the mesmerizing sand clouds in my previous post). We left home the very day this gorgeous music video, Chase The Wind, was released. We listened to it on the road, passing the phone around to watch and listen in awe as it played out before us. Hours later we would find ourselves watching seabirds flying through wind tunnels chasing layers of blue along the rugged Oregon coastline.
.
Months before this music video was released, my husband, artist and illustrator Brian @brianthompsonart was sitting in our kitchen over coffee, drawing pen-and-ink mini-animations while listening intently to the most beautiful piano music we had ever heard by Jamie Halama @jamiehalamamusic . We played the song over and over, feeling ourselves swept along on its journey, lifting and falling with each note.
.
Brian began working in the mornings to match single-moment traditional animations to the arcs and valleys of Jamie’s song, bringing the incredible sound of Chase The Wind visually alive. The emotionally transfixing sound of Chase The Wind was composed in similar fashion—one singularly perfect note at a time as Jamie listened to the waves crashing below his cottage on the coastal English countryside. Can you imagine composing and marking down the notes of this song all by yourself? Playing it out in your living room until the sound soared through the cottage and came to life, a catharsis all its own? Can you imagine the years of practice and play that lead up to its creation?
.
Many early mornings and over two thousand frames of single animations later, Jamie’s song and Brian’s animations are alive together.
.
In the busy pace of life, I hope you pause for 3 minutes and watch and listen, maybe many times on replay like I like to do. And, please support music that reminds you to follow & feel by following Jamie @jamiehalamamusic and supporting his album. Follow the link to Jamie’s offerings in my profile. And, if you haven’t followed my husband Brian @brianthompsonart , please do. Thank you. 🙏🏼
We got away for the first time since all of this b We got away for the first time since all of this began. We drove to the coast of Southern Oregon and stayed just outside of Florence. Highly recommend. Photos in stories. This is a gorgeous snippet of the sand clouds that I caught video of during a sunset watch. Isn’t it glorious? It was otherwise warm and calm and clear. We’re back and soaking up some spring sun and getting some more seeds in the ground. Posts about that soon. 🌱💚

Good evening to you, my lovely friends! 😊 I had Good evening to you, my lovely friends! 😊 I had a long and busy day, how was yours?
.
We took our rescue kittens (that we’ve had for a little under 2 weeks) to the vet, which was a Big Traumatic Deal for them. They were rescued in poor health from city streets. One of them was in such bad shape she had to have her tail amputated. Then they were spayed, vaccinated, and held until we adopted them. The organization that rescues them is the last resort for many animals who would otherwise be euthanized at most nonprofit animal rescue organizations.
.
Today I learned that one of our kitties has a bacterial or fungal infection on her nose, so I spent all day bathing them both with a special anti fungal treatment, cleaning out their space, and trying to get them to believe in me again. After all, hadn’t I just proven to them that the world is indeed everything they thought it was? Undependable and cruel and just when you think you’re safe someone takes you to the vet and bathes you in stinky stuff?
.
At the end of the day I decided to heck with it, I was going to snuggle these dear babies, and I did, bundled inside a towel and held snugly to my chest. This was their first time being held. I rocked them on our bench swing and sang them lullabies. When they each sighed and weighted in, becoming warm and sleepy, I found myself feeling lots of things.
.
Do you know what this reminded me of? Life is unbelievably hard sometimes. Sometimes it requires all your strength to just go on. Sometimes, though, maybe you get lucky, and a kind stranger or dear friend sees you and says, *I see you need help and I am here for you.* Maybe after that long journey you realize how strong and resilient you are just for being alive, and maybe you even end up in the arms of someone who loves you and will carefully and unconditionally take care of you for the rest of your life. Maybe your big shiny star self will remind someone what strength and resilience really means—the chance to be quiet and relax in a safe haven where you can rise up and create a lovely life. Maybe dinner will be yummy & you’ll get to wander in green grass and listen to birds and pounce on mice. Maybe that. 💗
One of my favorite ways to start building a sustai One of my favorite ways to start building a sustainable garden is to simply plant biennial greens and perennial herbs. 🌿 I let many of my greens go to seed and self-reproduce. Arugula, kales, and mustards (shown here) create beautiful edible flowers (delicious white/plum-tinged flowers for arugula, yellow for mustards & kales) before turning into hearty seed pods. You can harvest the seed pods and let them dry on the stem (and give away as a beautiful living addition to a bouquet of greens & flowers!), or you can simply let them go to seed and open & scatter seeds on their own time, spreading throughout the garden—the very beginning of your own sustainable food forest.
.
There are many biennial herbs & vegetables. It’s important that they be open-pollinated, organic (non-GMO), and not a hybrid variety. My favorite herbs & greens that either go dormant & come back to life on their own or go to seed & reproduce all by themselves are celery, chard, collard, endive, kale, bok choi , parsley, arugula, chives, mint, oregano, thyme, borage, edible pansies, and chamomile. They must be open pollinated seeds rather than hybrid or F1 seeds to continue their line.
.
Did you know that edible flowering plants produce edible flowers? It’s true! Nosh confidently & decorate everything savory & sweet with their beautiful flowers.
.
With a little planning, you can create an entirely self-sustaining herb & greens garden that features stunning, fragrant edible flowers that attract pollinators and support your local bees and birds 🐝 🐦 and does all the work for you by self-selecting, setting, communicating, resting, renewing, and replanting all by themselves. How awesome is that? 💚🌱🌳

Hello friends old & new! 👋 Sound up. This is ju Hello friends old & new! 👋 Sound up. This is just a reminder from nature to sit down and listen today. Put things on pause. What do you hear? Sometimes it’s the rush of a creek or ambling brook, trees whispering and crackling, or the soft shush of bird wings. Sometimes it’s more shrill—the call of the red tailed hawk family preparing their nest for their new batch of babies, or a hummingbird’s rush of wings for the day’s nectar. Maybe it’s a car rumbling by as you sit and listen. Whatever it might be, try to remember that there are gifts to the pause. You don’t need to be busy all the time. The gift of pause may circle you back to the place of joy that brought you there in the first place—the peace and quiet joy of a moment in this life, right now, just listening. In the rush and comparison of daily life, maybe the pause will remind you to do it your way, and you’re doing just fine. You’re not alone in the wilderness of any single moment. 💚🌱

How to plant onion starts. Here’s how I plant Wa How to plant onion starts. Here’s how I plant Walla-Walla onion starts. While I direct-sow nearly all my other produce, I buy onion starts in bundles of 50 from my local gardening store. They cost about $2 per bundle. Here, we planted 250 onion starts for $10. You can also easily start these indoors from seed, or plant them from bulbs, but I have learned that planting onion starts like these offer the fastest & best results.
.
Onions love full sun, well-drained soil, and rich organic amendments. Because their roots form both below and above ground, they need careful attention to watering during the hottest months, with some thoughtful attention to not over-saturating their papery bulbs as they mature. Otherwise, they are incredibly easy to grow and offer pest-deterrent properties to many companion plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, greens, herbs, brassicas, and squash.
.
I use onions in nearly every meal, from sautés and soups to salsas, burgers, and sandwiches. I always add them to pickles and ferments. And, if you’ve never tried homegrown, homemade, deep fried onion rings dipped in homemade tartar sauce with fresh dill from the garden, may I suggest that this might be the year? 🧅😋🙌

This doesn’t look like much but it’s one of my This doesn’t look like much but it’s one of my favorite gardening shortcuts. Each little 50-count bundle of onions (in this case Walla-Walla sweet onions) costs about $2 and quickly grows into gorgeous sweet yellow onions by summertime, with plenty of smaller, tender sweet onions to harvest and eat in early spring & throughout the year. I’m rehydrating 250 onion starts in a bit of water before planting directly in the soil. I never plant enough onions. Sweet, fresh, baby onions don’t have the same heat & bite as mature ones do, and are literally delicious eaten raw or on a toasted sandwich with simply mayo, salt ‘n pepper, and lettuce or arugula. I use onions as the base of nearly every meal, from sautés to soups to salsas. I’m also planting 240 onion bulbs (swipe to see those). For us here in Zone 8b in the PNW and gardening by the moon’s phases that means these babies are going in the soil later this afternoon & tomorrow (March 21-22).
.
Remember, always use the green onion tops of every onion you harvest—they are delicious in soups, stir-fries, salsas, and even simply cut and frozen for later.
.
Locals: you can find onion starts @valleynurseryinc and @bayhayandfeed but call first to check inventory.

One of my very favorite parts of spring is the eme One of my very favorite parts of spring is the emergence of wild food—nature’s way of decorating the land with edible beauty that’s nourishing and pulls us out of the darker days of winter’s hearty fireside meals. Spring foraged foods highlight the bitter, spicy, tender, and bright flavors of the season.
.
Simple salad made from tender baby dandelions is simply gourmet. These are dressed in chive flowers, good olive oil, salt ‘n pepper, and a dash of red wine vinegar. They are perfect alongside rustic baked potatoes filled with butter & sautéed spring onions and radishes and diced fresh parsley and chives.
.
If you haven’t felt brave enough to explore dandelion salad, might I suggest you try some soon? 🌞 Just forage, wash, trim ends, spin dry, and dress. Pick only from non-pesticide-treated zones. If you want a romantic in-kitchen view of a titan’s approach to this simple salad, head to @jacquespepinfoundation and watch him prepare a wild dandelion salad for two. ❤️

Gardening post. 👩‍🌾 We get glimpses of the Gardening post. 👩‍🌾 We get glimpses of the moody moon often on our nearby beaches, or rising above the evergreens skirting our land. Growing up on our Puget Sound island, I used to walk miles on wavy low-tide flats, spelunking the ocean floor and swimming in tidal pools, racing on ridged sand and pretending I was a champion runner in The Chariots of Fire, music thumping in my heart while salt air filled my lungs with bright cool. The tides & the moon have always reminded me of a salient truth: We are all living under the same moon. This has always comforted me.
.
This year I am doing something different (for me), which is to garden according to the moon’s phases. This is an ancient practice, in effect since humans discovered they could stop wandering and gathering and plant roots instead. The moon’s phases have long guided farming practices, and this year I am tapping into that wisdom through the moon calendar on the @farmersalmanac . This means I am comfortable enough with the climate & seasonal planting cycles in my gardening zone #zone8b and can use the moon’s phases to further guide my monthly activities in the garden.
.
Why? According to The Farmers Almanac, “Those who swear by this ancient growing method say the water in both the ground and in plants are affected by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon, just like ocean tides are. Just as the tides are highest during the New and Full phases of the Moon, this theory holds, seeds, too, will absorb the most water during these times.”Currently we are all marching toward The Full Worm Moon of March on Sunday 3/28. 🌝🪱 According to The Farmers Almanac, “March’s full Moon goes by the name Worm Moon, which was originally thought to refer to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring. This invites robins and other birds to feed—a true sign of spring!"
.
According to the Moon Calendar 3/10-3/11 are barren phases this year—no planting. I am weeding, amending beds & mulching. Then, 3/12-3/13 are great for setting strawberry & vine plants & transplanting. This is when I will get my 30 blueberry plants in the soil and plant table grapes & strawberries.

PSA: Not sponsored, not an ad. I’m headed out to PSA: Not sponsored, not an ad. I’m headed out to the garden today (it’s supposed to be sunny all day & even all week!) and I will be weeding, mulching, and prepping beds all week (I will share in stories as I go). In the planting season ahead, I have thousands of food & flower seeds and bulbs and shrubs to plant in succession. To be honest, I don’t know how many flower seeds & bulbs I purchased but I think it is around ten thousand...and then maybe a thousand veggie & herb seeds. 🌱 I am so excited about it, I woke up in the middle of the night last night at 2 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep for awhile because I wanted to wake up and weed around my emerging ranunculus and tulip & daffodil shoots. This is truly an exciting time of year! 🌱🌷💫

As many if you know, 3 of us in my family are gluten-free for medical reasons. Making gluten-free bread is a lot of fun but it’s not like the gorgeous kneaded and shaped artisan breads of lore. It involves a hand-held mixer and no kneading. Buying loaves at the store are, I kid you not, $7-$12 per ONE small loaf (about 1/2 the size of a regular loaf of bread for 3x the price). I usually make all our own bread but I admittedly got tired. Recently I decided to make life easier and infinitely cheaper and I bought this Hamilton Beach bread maker from Costco. It’s $97 and has a gluten-free bread setting. Every morning I add organic GF flour, well water, just-laid eggs from our chickens, yeast, and sea salt, and we have fresh bread by lunch time. It’s a game changer here. It won’t replace my artisan sourdough bread making efforts, but it’s already more than made up for its initial cost in providing us with seriously delicious fresh bread daily. Why does this matter to me so much right now? It means I can be outside while my little fairy assistant bread maker does all of the mixing, rising, and baking for me. 🧚🏼‍♀️

Soo, what IS the most important thing to pay attention to? The numero uno most important thing? It’s your gardening zone. 🗺 It’s basically your gardening bible, so bookmark it & refer to it greedily & often for a holistic long-term view of your planting seasons. You can find a link to the zone finder in the my “Grow Food for A Year” series on my blog eatingbuckets.com
.
Today in stories I am also sharing how this year I am adding an age-old planting strategy focused on planting produce & flowers in harmony with the phases of the moon. Sound woo-woo? It kinda does to me, too, but honestly....it’s a 200+ year strategy and after living by the tides my whole life and watching the weather play like a merry sprite in whimsical play with the phases of the moon, it just makes sense to give it a try. But that’s not to the exclusion of the basic common sense of the weather around you—soil temperature, seasonal changes, comfort (like whether you want to plant in the pouring rain or not, not me...) etc.. 🌧🌝☀️

It’s funny the things that make you breathe. Wha It’s funny the things that make you breathe. What makes YOU breathe? Sometimes you don’t know what they are until you see them. I remember reading Where’d You Go, Bernadette, by Maria Semple, when it first came out. I had just returned from a long walk on the beach, where I had perched on a giant driftwood log and stared at the horizon line far in the distance, watching sailboats and birds and puffy clouds dot where water met sky. In her book, Semple says, “When your eyes are softly focused on the horizon for sustained periods, your brain releases endorphins. It's the same as a runner's high. These days we all spend our lives staring at screens twelve inches in front of us.” We need space to stretch our gaze. For most of us, it’s how we dream and think at our best. It’s where our creative ideas come through like a slip of mail through a mail slot. Plink. When I first stood in the dining room during the open house of our home and looked out the window, I saw waves of soft hills and valleys and tall grasses. Now, I stare out every morning over coffee. The horizon line is etched by the jagged marks of trees biting sky. Most mornings we listen to hawks call. I read, write, think. And I breathe. It’s a reminder to look up and look around, take it in, let your pulse slow and your chest steady, stretch your thoughts wide, and let your mind drift out amongst the green.
